Etymology A contraction of the Greek hypo (meaning less than) and ancistrus, an allusion to the reduced number of teeth (particularly in the lower jaw) found in this genus.

Size 80mm or 3.1" SL. Find near, nearer or same sized spp.
Identification Not easy as many different Hypancistrus from various rivers have about the same range of size and colour pattern. L136a and b are the same as LDA05 and LDA06 and are all the same variable species. L136c is a rarely found variant that is probably the same species but this is less certain. L158 is an adult L136c/LDA06. Belly white on both sexes.
Sexing Typical for the genus.
Male: interopercular and pectoral odontodes longer. Plate odontodes on the body. Hard ray of pectoral fins broader. head wider and longer.
Female: smaller size and rounder in the ventral.

Compatibility Territorial towards conspecific and other Loricariids that have the same size range. Rather shy
Suggested Tankmates Small tetras and other similar small fish. Also Corydoras. Care has to be taken to ensure that they get enough food, as they can be a bit shy and slow to grab food when available.
Breeding Good water change with drop of temperature every 2 days with heater left unplugged overnight right after the water change can trigger spawning. Female lays around 30 eggs in a cave being guarded by the males until the yolk sac is absorbed.
