Type Locality Laguna Tonina, 1 kilometer upstream from La Esmeralda, upper Río Orinoco, 3°08'00''N, 65°32'00''W, La Esmeralda, Estado amazonas, Venezuela.
Etymology Callichthys: From the Greek kallos, meaning beautiful and ichthys, meaning fish; in reference to the colour pattern. The specific epithet comes from the Latin serra meaning saw, and labium, lip, in allusion to the serrated free margin of the lower lip.

Size 158mm or 6.2" SL. Find near, nearer or same sized spp.
Identification Viewing the underside of the fish shows the lower lip to have a ragged, wavy profile. Young fish have a more striking vertically barred colouration.
Sexing Males develop a thickened bright orange first ray in the pectoral fin, where females have a thin first ray. Also, mature males have a thick adipose-fat body on the ventral surface of the pectoral fin.
