| Etymology | Callichthys: From the Greek kallos, meaning beautiful and ichthys, meaning fish; in reference to the colour pattern. The specific epithet comes from the Latin serra meaning saw, and labium, lip, in allusion to the serrated free margin of the lower lip. |

| Identification | Viewing the underside of the fish shows the lower lip to have a ragged, wavy profile. Young fish have a more striking vertically barred colouration. |
| Sexing | Males develop a thickened bright orange first ray in the pectoral fin, where females have a thin first ray. Also, mature males have a thick adipose-fat body on the ventral surface of the pectoral fin. |
