Etymology	Greek, chaite = hair + Greek, stoma = mouth.
Species Information
Size	110mm or 4.3" SL. Find near, nearer or same sized spp.
Identification	The genus Chaetostoma is not straightforward to identify, but as a general rule, the species has spines behind the gill-cover (interopercular odontodes), no plates on the abdomen, and aside from C. platyrhynchus also lack plates on the snout edge. Different from Ancistrus by not having fleshy tentacles on the snout.
Sexing	The males have however a somewhat larger and broader head, slimmer ventral sides and disproportionately large pelvic fins. Perhaps the over-sized pelvic fins play a large role in the fertilization of the eggs. By inverting these over the clutch of eggs, they prevent the sperm cells being carried away too fast in the current.
General Remarks	Almost simultaneously in the spring of 1999, Aquariengrotte, a pet shop in Hamburg, and the wholesaler Transfish (Planegg in Munich) received a mix of different mountain stream plecos from Colombia. These fish were imported as Chaetostoma sp. ''Yellow''. They come from the Rio Magdalena river system. The most interesting species from this import is shown here, but exactly why (like all other species from this import) it is was labelled ''yellow Chaetostoma'' is not clear - the fish is certainly not yellow!

Husbandry Information
Feeding	As an aufwuchs grazer they can be simply fed with tablet food and vegetation. In addition, it is quite straightforward to acclimatize them to other foods. User data.
Furniture	Rounded pebbles on sand. Plants are not required.
Compatibility	Peaceful if territorially defensive.
Suggested Tankmates	Cooler, fast water fishes. These are sometimes hard to obtain from South America, so think about hillstream cyprinids as an alternative.
Breeding	Not reported in the aquarium although more common species of Chaetostoma have reproduced in captivity.
