Species Information | |
Size | 29mm or 1.1" SL. Find near, nearer or same sized spp. |
Identification | Members of the genus Pseudolaguvia are small erethistid catfishes inhabiting hill streams and large rivers in the area bordered by the Ganges River drainage (northern India) to the west and the Sittang River drainage (east-central Myanmar) to the east. They can be distinguished from other sisorids by their small size,a combination of a thoracic adhesive apparatus with a median depression and prominent postcoracoid processes. Pseudolaguvia virgulata is unique among congeners in having stripes along its flanks, as all other Pseudolaguvia species have pale patches, pale transverse bands, or altogether lack pale markings on the flanks ; none have been reported to possess any longitudinal markings. In other aspects of its color pattern, P. virgulata most closely resembles P. inornata (from the Feni River drainage in Bangladesh) in having caudal fin lobes with brown submarginal stripes running along the entire length of the caudal fin lobes (vs. lobes with transverse brown bands near the tips in all other congeners). However, the two species can be distinguished by the presence of narrow, pale longitudinal stripes on the sides of the body in P. virgulata (absent in P. inornata) and a pale, Y-shaped marking on the head (absent in P. inornata). Pseudolaguvia virgulata further differs from P. inornata in having a longer pectoral fin (28.5–29.1% SL vs. 20.6–26.0) and in having a serrated (vs. smooth) anterior edge of the dorsal spine. |
Sexing | Not known. |
General Remarks | It is very likely that this species has not been exported for the trade as yet but general care will be very similar to that of other Pseudolaguvia species. |
Habitat Information | |
Distribution | Known from the Barak River drainage in Mizoram, India . The Barak
River forms the headwaters of the Surma-Meghna River system (one of the three river systems that combine to form the Ganges Delta). IUCN Red List Category | Data Deficient , range map and more is available on the IUCN species page. Last assessed 2010. |
Other Parameters | The water should be cool and heavily oxygenated with a good flow as these fish occur in hill streams. Anything above 25 C will hamper long term survival as these fish tend to wither away at higher temperatures. |
Husbandry Information | |
Feeding | Known to take only live food like blood worms, frozen brine shrimp etc. Spot feeding will help in case tank mates are voracious feeders. User data. |
Furniture | Fine sand for the bottom and smooth pebbles / rocks. This species has been collected from clear, shallow, moderately fast flowing streams with a predominantly sandy bottom. |
Compatibility | A peaceful species suitable for a hillstream biotope.Extreme care should be taken while choosing their tankmates as these fish are extremely poor at competing for food. |
Suggested Tankmates | Cyprinids like Barilius and Danios and Balitorine loaches like Homaloptera species. |
Breeding | Unreported. |
