Distribution North America: primarily in Atlantic slope drainages from Nova Scotia (Maritimes, Canada), to south Carolina and Georgia, USA. Its former subspecies, R. obtusus is found primarily in upper Mississippi and Ohio drainages, USA and in Manitoba, Canada.
